How We Work
We like the idea of having as much time as we need to create a piece. The current economy has its own ideas about that, so we’ve had to work in a way not truly in our best interests artistically speaking. That said, we’ve learned how to make good work very quickly. But we’re still working towards freeing ourselves from the necessities of the marketplace to achieve our ideal of an open-ended creative process.
The material we work on addresses the larger questions of human existence, instead of more pedestrian issues that usually find a place in so-called “domestic drama.” Our work focuses on the ambiguous and/or ambivalent nature of complex human relationships. Plays with morals like fortune cookies and tidy resolutions do not reflect our beliefs.
Our Values
- Communication is at the heart of the ensemble. It’s not easy and often clarity is assumed, which is dangerous. But effective communication, ways of contributing to artistic and managerial conversations, including but not limited to verbalization, keeps Rabbit Hole focused and growing.
- The practice of respect…for ideas, feelings, growth, struggle, personal and professional responsibilities, and time…is essential to us.
- Quality. We aspire to and attain high-quality ensemble-based minimalist theatre that one can only find at Rabbit Hole.
- Playful attitude. We make fools of ourselves daily in rehearsals. We’ve found that approaching the work with the desire to ‘play’ leads to dynamic, exciting work.
- Risk-taking. All collaborators are encouraged to make big choices, and to stretch themselves as artists.
- Keep working. A Rabbit Hole production is not considered “complete” until the final performance has ended. Throughout the life of the work, the ensemble strives to improve it, to develop the work until it is absolutely the best we can possibly present to an audience.
- We also keep tickets affordable so that cost won’t prevent people from coming and even offer free performances once a year to under-served communities in Brooklyn.
